configuration

This configuration will expand upon the out-of-the-box standard configuration to scan for rootkits, scan boot sectors, and automate the scanning process.

  1. Double-click the umbrella at the bottom-right corner of the screen to open the main window.
  2. Click on Configuration near the top-right of the window.
  3. Place a checkmark next to Expert Mode near the top-left.
  4. In the Additional Settings section place checkmarks next to Scan boot sectors of selected drives and Search for Rootkits before scan.
  5. Click the + next to Scan so you can see Action for concerning files. Click on it.
  6. Activate Automatic by clicking its radio button.
  7. Set primary action to repair and secondary action to quarantine.
  8. Click OK to finish and return you to the main window.

running a scan

  1. Double-click the umbrella at the bottom-right corner of the screen to open the main window.
  2. Click on scan system now across from Last complete system scan.

disable that annoying pop-up

for XP Home and Media Center Edition

  1. Boot into Safe Mode.
  2. Log in using the Administrator account.
  3. Work your way into C:\Program File\AntiVir PersonalEdition Classic\avnotify.exe.
  4. Right click on avnotify.exe.
  5. Select Properties.
  6. Click the Security tab along the top.
  7. Click the Advanced button near the bottom.
  8. You should be viewing the Permissions tab. Select a user then press the Edit button.
  9. Look for Traverse Folder/Execute File and place a check in its Deny box.
  10. Repeat for the rest of the listed users.

for XP Professional

  1. Click the START button then select Run....
  2. Type in secpol.msc then hit Enter.
  3. Select Software Restriction Policy.
  4. Click on the Action menu at the top and select Create New Restriction Policies.
  5. On the right side right-click on Additional Rules then left click on New Path Rule....
  6. Click Browse and work your way into C:\Program Files\AntiVir Personal Edtion Classic\.
  7. Select the avnotify.exe file and set the security level to Disallowed.
